Manage Your Workload More Effectively with Delegation

Manage Your Workload More Effectively with Delegation

When you’re the one in charge, you have decisions to make about business responsibilities, tasks, and duties, as well as who will carry them out. You hire employees to handle it all, but there are plenty of different ways to delegate tasks based on your personal management style and the work style of your team.

Let’s go over how you can delegate tasks to your team using various levels of involvement on your part.

Hands-On

Depending on the employee, the individual might need more oversight than others to effectively get the job done. Someone at this level of delegation needs you to be quite involved in the process and might even require step-by-step guidance to stay on task. Basically, you are giving employees at this stage clear, concrete instructions that should be strictly followed.

Checking In and Reporting

This level of delegation means that you’re still making the final decision about the work being done, but you expect your team to provide you with information throughout the process. You’ll still be guiding them, but you’ll be taking a slightly more hands-off approach and granting them individual freedom to do the work, provided they get the results you are looking for.

Balanced Recommendations

This type of delegation style involves collaboration between you and your team to work toward a desired outcome. Your team will still be providing you with information, but you are also contributing your opinion throughout the process. You still have the final say, and your team’s work will contribute to what you ultimately decide.

Informed Independence

This type of delegation is when you trust that your employees will get the job done on their own, making important decisions themselves with minimal supervision or oversight on your part. They’ll still keep you informed throughout the process, though, but you won’t necessarily influence them much throughout the process unless you feel it is absolutely necessary. The key here is that the work still gets done without putting a greater burden or strain on your own responsibilities.

True Independence

In this final type of delegation, you simply take a hands-off approach and leave it up to your employees to use their best judgment with the work they perform. They have full autonomy, as well as full accountability, for the work they do. This type of trust is not built overnight, and your team will have to prove themselves before you can be sure they are worthy of it, but you can greatly increase your own productivity by taking this approach.
